MoonBurner by Clair Luana

He stood before the small basin of water, resting on a rickety table on the other side of the cabin and unwrapped their daughter. She was so beautiful. Even red and wrinkled, he could tell she had her mother’s fine hands, delicate but strong. She had his square jawbone. He wondered whether she would be as stubborn as he was in his youth. But he was delaying.
He plunged her into the water and held her there, his own heart hammering in his chest like a wild beast desperate to be set free. He began counting. Ten. She flailed under the water, her tiny limbs no match for his strong calloused hands. Thirty. At sixty, he could let her up. And try to save her. Fifty. Relief and hope began to well in him.
And then a bright white light exploded from his daughter. He stumbled back, throwing an arm over his eyes. She illuminated the cabin, shining silver light into cobwebbed corners and dusty crevices.
After a few seconds, the light died and his daughter was herself again. Tiny, pink, floating on top of the water peacefully. He and Hanae locked eyes. She had turned over and was half sitting up on her cot. The look of helpless horror on her face was mirrored on his own.

“I knew she would be,” Hanae said softly. “A moonburner. And a strong one.”

The Departed Excerpt from Chapter 1
The first strange thing that happened was that my best friend Lana didn’t text me back that morning. This is the kind of statement that makes adults roll their eyes, and at first I didn’t think anything of it either. We usually exchanged about twenty-plus messages every morning before we got to school. I figured that she may have just gotten in trouble and her parents had taken her phone away, which happened pretty often. One time they took her phone away because she had been caught texting during a church service. Another time they took it away just because her lip gloss looked too “lipsticky”—whatever that means. They were super strict like that.
The next weird thing that happened was when I came down to the kitchen for breakfast and found my mom completely absorbed in her tablet. This was only weird because she had a rule about anyone using devices during “family time,” which the ten minutes it took me to eat breakfast were supposed to constitute.
Normally, she would immediately put it down when I came into the room in order for me not to think she was being a hypocrite. Instead she continued her concentrated scowl in the glow of her tablet’s screen, despite the fact that I had already poured my cereal and was sitting across from her at the table.
“Ahem,” I finally said with my eyebrows raised.
Mom looked up at me sheepishly. “Sorry about that, Gwen,” she said, putting her tablet down. “What do you have planned for today?” I figured whatever she was looking at must not have been that important if she didn’t think it was worth mentioning.
“The usual. You know, going to school and stuff.” I knew how much my mom hated vague answers to specific questions. She prided herself on having open communication with her teenager.
“Okay, I deserved that.”
I smiled. “I think Lana is in trouble again,” I offered.
“What else is new?” she laughed.
“She hasn’t replied to me yet all morning.”
“Holy rollers can be such buzzkills. Aren’t you lucky to have cool parents that are not punishing you all the time?”
“Yeah, you guys are so cool . . .” I said, rolling my eyes. I considered that maybe I should find some friends whose parents were obviously cooler so my mom didn’t let it get into her head that she is such a “cool” parent. “There’s totally nothing cooler than parents who point out how cool they are all the time.”
“Well, if we don’t point it out, you might forget,” my dad said as he walked into the kitchen. “What’s going on this morning?”
“Lana hasn’t texted Gwen back yet this morning. So obviously something catastrophic has happened,” Mom answered.
“You know, she could just be in the shower or something?” Dad pointed out. “Or do you guys bring your phones in the shower now too?”
“Yeah, it’s been like a half hour. No one showers that long.”
“Well, I would if I didn’t have to go to work every morning.”
“Great story, Dad . . .” I said and took another bite of my cereal.

Although I did like this book because it was a different read for me. Jenna one of the main characters kind of annoyed me.

I mean I kind of understood that she wanted something more out of life, besides just doing the same old things with her husband. But she never really truly talked with him I believe. Jenna kind of just blew up at him and then took a business trip.

So while Jenna is off having fun and trying to find herself Camden her husband is left miserable not knowing where they stand.

He meets Vi who is great and easy to talk with and Camden starts forgetting about being miserable. Vi starts falling for Camden but knows it’s wrong because he’s married.

Can Jenna realize what she has before she loses Camden? Will Camden decide not to wait around for Jenna? Will Vi find another guy perfect for her?

Torn by Jennifer L. Armentrout… Excerpt reveal

My fingers tightened around the slender remote. “I was thinking that if the prince can sense me, why hasn’t he showed up here?”

“I don’t know.” Tink came down to the coffee table and started marching across it. I’m not the prince, but if I was the prince, I’d be buying time.”

“Buying time?” I scooted to the edge of the couch.

“Yeah, because he’s got to win you over.” Tink swiped up the straw he’d had in his Coke. It was nearly the size of him. “That’s basically what he has to do if he wants to impregnate you.”

I cringed, like a full body cringe. “Please do not use the word impregnate ever again.”

“Why? That’s what he wants to do.” He started dancing with the straw, the kind of dancing you see in the clubs. Hips gyrating all over the place. “He knows coercing or tricking you isn’t going to get the deed done, so he’s probably trying to learn how not to be a sexed up dickhead.”

              “Sexed up dickhead?” I repeated.

“Uh-huh.” Tink dipped the straw as one would a dancer. “Remember when I was telling you how I saw the prince getting it on with three females once? He’s totes sexed up. And he’s a dickhead. In other words, he has no empathy or compassion. No humanity.”

              “Most fae don’t.”

Tink twirled the straw. “Yeah, but the ancients are worse. They’re as far away from human as you can get. He’s going to have to work on wooing you.”

I slowly shook my head. “That’s…” There were no words.

“That’s what I’d do.” Tink dropped the straw and whipped around toward me. “Or he’s plotting something major and any moment he’s going to knock down the front door and storm the place.”

“Wow.” A fine shiver curled down my spine. “That’s really a relaxing thought.”

He zipped over to the couch and sat on the arm. He tipped his head back and stared up at me. “Don’t worry. I’m here to protect you.”

I just looked at him, because other than ordering shit off of Amazon, the only strength he had was the unique ability to annoy the crap out of me while somehow still managing to be endearing.

Tink grinned. “Trust me, Ivy. The Prince is notgoing to want to mess with me.”

TORN Synopsis:

Torn between duty and survival, nothing can be the same.

Then there’s Ren Owens, the sexy, tattooed Elite member of the Order who has been sharing Ivy’s bed and claiming her heart. Their chemistry is smoking hot, but Ivy knows that Ren has always valued his duty to the Order above all else—he could never touch her if he knew the truth. That is, if he let her live at all. Yet how can she live with herself if she lies to him?

But as the Fae Prince begins to close in on Ivy, intent on permanently opening the gates to the Otherworld, Ivy is running out of options. If she doesn’t figure out who she can trust—and fast—it’s not only her heart that will be torn apart, but civilization itself.
